Donald Trump believes his tariffs drama with Mexico and Canada will somehow make the World Cup more interesting.
Trump established a FIFA 2026 World Cup task force through an executive order on Friday, calling the tournament a chance to “showcase the Nation’s pride and hospitality while promoting economic growth and tourism through sport.”
The World Cup will feature 104 matches across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time in over two decades that the event spans multiple nations. With all three countries engaged in a tariff war, Trump believes the political climate will only enhance the tournament’s appeal.
“Tension is a good thing,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “It makes it much more exciting.”
Trump, who plans to attend some matches, will chair the task force alongside J.D. Vance, with key Cabinet members also participating. The White House estimates the event will create 40,000 jobs and generate up to $480 million in economic impact for host cities.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, attending the executive order signing, revealed the U.S. has a shot at winning and unveiled the 2025 Club World Cup trophy. He also made history, announcing the first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show.
“I can confirm the first ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final in New York New Jersey, in association with Global Citizen,” Infantino posted on Instagram. Coldplay will help select performers.
“Times Square will host celebrations for the final weekend,” he added, promising an “incredible” event.
