Secret Service Agents Shoot "Suicidal" Indiana Man After Confrontation Near White House

The U.S. Secret Service shot an armed Indiana man a block from the White House early Sunday after local police warned them of a “suicidal individual,” the agency reported.

“Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW,” spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed on Twitter.

Federal agents located the man’s car near 17th and F Street, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The unidentified suspect then walked toward Pennsylvania Avenue, where he was confronted by Secret Service agents.

An “armed confrontation” ensued when the man pulled out a firearm. Agents fired, wounding him before transporting him to a hospital in unknown condition. No Secret Service members were harmed.

The man, reportedly suicidal, had traveled from Indiana to Washington, D.C., on Saturday, prompting local police to alert federal authorities. His motives remain unclear.

Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida when the incident occurred.

The DC Metropolitan Police’s Internal Affairs Division is leading the investigation.

During Trump’s first term, a similar incident occurred in August 2020 when a 51-year-old suspect fired toward the White House before “running aggressively” at agents. The Secret Service shot him in the torso as Trump was briefly escorted from a press briefing before returning.
