The United States has been added to the CIVICUS Monitor Watchlist due to unprecedented threats to civic freedoms under Donald Trump’s administration, according to a March 10 report from the global human rights watchdog.
CIVICUS, which tracks government crackdowns on civil liberties worldwide, says the Trump administration’s sweeping executive orders and mass firings are undermining democratic institutions, restricting free speech, and limiting public protest rights.
“This is an unparalleled attack on the rule of law in the United States, not seen since the days of McCarthyism in the twentieth century,” said Mandeep Tiwana, Interim Co-Secretary General of CIVICUS.
Mass Firings and Political Takeover of Federal Agencies
- Federal employees have been dismissed en masse, particularly in agencies overseeing justice, national security, and civil rights enforcement.
- Trump loyalists now dominate key government institutions, including the Justice Department and FBI, raising concerns about impartiality and constitutional protections.
- A wave of restrictive executive orders has targeted diversity programs, civil rights protections, and federal aid to marginalized communities.
Crackdown on Protests and Student Activists
- Authorities have intensified repression against pro-Palestinian protesters, with student visa cancellations and harsh penalties for activists.
- At least 12 states have introduced laws restricting protests, including bans on wearing masks at demonstrations.
- Legislative changes threaten non-profits, allowing the Treasury Department to revoke tax-exempt status on vague terrorism-related grounds.
Foreign Aid and Press Freedom Under Attack
- Trump’s withdrawal from global institutions like the World Health Organization and UN Human Rights Council is further isolating the U.S. from international human rights efforts.
