Authorities in Belize are investigating whether a bottle of tequila may have played a role in the deaths of three Massachusetts women found unresponsive at a beach resort last month.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows Kaoutar Naqqad, 23, Imane Mallah, 24, and Wafae El-Arar, 26—all from Revere, Massachusetts—carrying a bottle of tequila back to their room at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in February.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed the development to Channel 5 Belize and noted that investigators are now working to determine if the tequila contributed to the women’s deaths.

The families of the women are urging both Belize and U.S. authorities to conduct a “thorough and transparent” investigation. In a joint statement released on Monday, they expressed concern over the unclear circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“The circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain unclear and suspicious, and we are seeking answers to understand what happened in Belize,” the families said. “We urge the authorities in Belize and in the United States to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation so that we may find the truth and justice for Kaoutar, Imane, and Wafae.”

An initial autopsy revealed that all three women had fluid build-up in their lungs. However, a final toxicology report is still pending.

Authorities initially reported no visible injuries but noted there were signs that suggested a possible overdose. Last month, it was reported that alcohol and gummies found in the hotel room were sent for testing at Belize’s national laboratory.

Commissioner Williams also confirmed that he had a conference call with the families to provide updates on the investigation.
