Parents at Jehue Middle School in Colton, California, are demanding action after footage surfaced of the male student violently attacking the girl during class.
In the shocking clip, the boy is seen yanking the girl by her braids as other students laugh, some allegedly using racial slurs. The situation escalates as he slams her onto a desk, knocking her unconscious.
Community leaders and parents are calling for accountability. At a press conference, concerned parent Elena Tapia criticized the substitute teacher, stating, “It just escalated, the substitute teacher did not bother.”
Student Rosemary Hidalgo, who rushed to aid the girl, recalled, “I was trying to help because I was worried about her. I was seeing if she was OK, so I took her to the office.”
Activist Najee Ali condemned the assault, saying, “The video speaks for itself, so I don’t care who started or how it started. We saw the video. This victim is the young female student who was knocked unconscious on videotape.”
Bishop Talbert Swan shared the video on Instagram calling for the boy to be charged. However, authorities are investigating reports that the girl struck the boy with a metal object before the altercation. Both students were cited—him for assault with a deadly weapon and her for battery on school grounds.
The Colton Police Department confirmed that the case has been forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
