Lil Nas X unveiled his reason for leaving Atlanta at the start of his career, sharing that he felt “disconnected” from the city’s dominant hip-hop scene, home to stars like Young Thug, Future, and Lil Baby.

In a recent interview with Hot 107.9, he explained, “I felt like disconnected from it all, you know? I just felt like…I can’t see myself like belonging here and s**t.”

Nas X also reflected on how his breakout hit, “Old Town Road,” stood apart from the Atlanta sound. The song’s success was undeniable, achieving diamond status and making history as the first record in 22 years to earn the certification while still at number one, following Elton John’s “Candle In The Wind” from 1997.

Although he explored music life outside of Atlanta, Nas X emphasized his connection to his roots.

“I’m an Atlanta nigga. What am I doing? I can do this. I can…hop in my, like, ATL bag,” he said, showing his desire to return to his Southern origins and continue shaping his unique sound.

His latest release, “Hotbox,” appears to be Nas X’s attempt to reconnect with the city’s illustrious culture, a sneak peek at what his album may entail.
