Just days before a high-stakes Supreme Court election in Wisconsin, State Attorney General Josh Kaul is taking Elon Musk to court to block a planned $2 million giveaway Musk announced on social media.
Kaul filed a lawsuit Friday in Dane County Circuit Court, arguing that Musk’s offer to hand out $1 million checks to two Wisconsin voters could violate election laws. Musk first made the announcement Thursday night on X (formerly Twitter), saying he would personally give the money to people who had already voted in the court race.
Musk deleted the post hours later and followed up with a clarification, saying the money would actually go to people supporting an online petition against “activist judges,” not necessarily voters. He also said the Sunday event would be limited to petition signers, not just voters.
Still, the AG isn’t convinced. Kaul’s lawsuit points to the shifting nature of Musk’s event and says no official cancellation has been made. He wants the court to block Musk from handing out any money to Wisconsin voters, now or in the future.
Musk’s political action committee has already given away one $1 million check to a Green Bay man who supports conservative causes and Donald Trump.
