Trump Ends Legal Status for 900,000 Migrants as Supreme Court Backs Deportations Under Alien Enemies Act

Trump

Donald Trump took one of his most aggressive immigration actions since returning to office, canceling the legal status of 900,000 migrants who had been living in the U.S. under a program known as humanitarian parole.

Many affected migrants learned about the cancellation through a simple email from the Department of Homeland Security, informing them that their parole had been revoked. The sudden move leaves hundreds of thousands at risk of deportation, many of whom have been working, paying taxes, and contributing to their communities for years.

The decision came just hours before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to let Trump resume deportations under the rarely used Alien Enemies Act, a wartime law from 1798. The law is now being applied to deport migrants the administration says are associated with foreign gangs or criminal networks, particularly Venezuelan nationals.

While the Supreme Court did allow deportations to move forward, the justices added one condition: detainees must be allowed to challenge their removal in court. That small safeguard offers a chance at legal defense, but immigration advocates warn the rapid cancellations could still lead to mass removals before many even see a judge.

Legal experts and human rights groups are raising alarms, calling the moves unprecedented and devastating.

This story is developing.
