Death Toll Rises to 218 After Dominican Republic Nightclub Collapse During Merengue Concert

Roof Collapses at Popular Dominican Republic Nightclub

The death toll from the catastrophic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has risen to at least 218 people, according to national authorities. More than 150 others were injured during the tragedy, which took place just after midnight on Tuesday, April 8.

The collapse occurred during a live performance by iconic merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Authorities confirmed that Pérez, 69, was among the deceased.

Rescue operations have continued non-stop since the incident, with heavy machinery and specialized search teams deployed to sift through the debris. Officials say efforts are now focused on identifying the deceased using biometric systems and DNA analysis as families gather at the site, desperate for answers.

“We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at Jet Set,” Dominican President Luis Abinader said on social media. “All relief agencies have provided necessary assistance and are working tirelessly in the rescue efforts. Our prayers are with the affected families.”

The devastation has touched nearly every part of Dominican society—including the sports world. Former MLB pitchers Octavio Dotel, 51, and Tony Blanco, 44, were confirmed dead. Montecristi Governor Nelsy Milagros Cruz Martinez, sister to MLB star Nelson Cruz, also perished. The family has since issued a statement remembering her as a pillar of service and leadership.

U.S. officials confirmed that at least one American citizen was among the victims. Others with U.S. permanent residency status were also killed, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Though the exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation, authorities noted the nightclub had previously suffered fire damage in 2023. Structural integrity concerns are now under review as part of a full inquiry.
