Trump

Donald Trump and his administration have launched a controversial push to cut off support for immigrants who were previously protected under President Biden’s policies. One of the most aggressive tactics? Stripping legal immigrants of their Social Security numbers by labeling them “dead” in a federal database.

Documents reviewed by The New York Times and sources familiar with the effort reveal that this new strategy targets hundreds of thousands of immigrants who had lawful temporary status under the previous administration. These individuals had valid Social Security numbers and access to basic financial services—until now.

The Trump administration is reportedly using a little-known federal database, known as the “death master file,” to reclassify certain immigrants as deceased—even though they’re very much alive. This list was originally created to prevent fraud by stopping payments to people who had died. Now, officials are using it to effectively erase the financial identities of immigrants the administration wants to push out of the country.

Being marked as dead in this system has serious consequences. It cuts off access to bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and even some government services. Sources close to the matter say the real goal is to pressure these individuals into leaving the U.S. on their own, a strategy often called “self-deportation.”

This move marks one of the most striking efforts by the administration to restrict immigrant rights and benefits without needing to go through lengthy legal proceedings. Critics are raising concerns about the legality and ethics of the approach, calling it a backdoor tactic to push people out of the country by making it nearly impossible for them to live normal lives.

The policy hasn’t been publicly announced in full, and it’s unclear exactly how many people will be affected. However, insiders say the plan is already being rolled out quietly, with potentially massive consequences for immigrant communities across the U.S.As immigration remains a hot-button issue in the lead-up to the 2024 election, this latest move by President Trump’s administration is sure to spark intense national debate.
