Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel says the skin bleaching era is over.
During a recent stop at Hot 97, he admitted he once embraced skin lightening so much that he even had his own brand. But now, that chapter has closed.
“I mean, in hindsight, it definitely had to do with self-love, but on the other hand while I was doing it, my mind wasn’t telling me that,” Vybz said. “My mind was telling me, ‘I am doing this to show my tattoos.’ I’ve got a lot of tattoos.”
He added, “But looking back, it was just as a Black man, sometimes we have those issues but I would never bleach again though.”
When pressed about those “issues,” Vybz kept it honest.
“That Eurocentric look… Black people have always wanted to look like that,” he said. “I guess it has to do with slavery.”
Now, the Gaza boss says he’s fully melanated and proud, no filters and no lighteners.
