Social Security Administration Moves to Elon Musk’s X for All Public Announcements

SSA ditches traditional press releases in favor of posting updates exclusively on X as staff cuts hit public affairs offices

The Social Security Administration is changing how it communicates with the public. Going forward, the agency will use X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, for all announcements instead of press releases or updates on its website.

SSA regional commissioner Linda Kerr Davis shared the news with employees and reporters, saying this will become our communication mechanism. She encouraged anyone who normally relies on official memos or press updates to follow the SSA’s verified account on X to stay informed.

The change is tied to recent staffing cuts. Public affairs offices across the country have seen key roles reassigned to field offices, leaving regional teams without full communications staff.

Kerr Davis acknowledged that the shift may feel unusual but said it is a reflection of the times. I know this probably sounds very foreign to you, it did to me as well, and not what we are used to, but we are in different times now, she said.

The agency’s last press release, posted March 27th, pushed back on rumors that local field offices were closing. It included a link to an inactive social media page and pointed users to the new SSA account on X, which is owned by Elon Musk, a longtime supporter and donor to President Trump.

Despite the changes, SSA says no offices have been permanently closed. Leases on some locations may end as the agency continues moving toward virtual services, but officials promised to work closely with local leaders before making any major decisions.
