Luigi Mangione’s Attorneys Are Betting On A Psychiatric Defense In The UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing Case

The case of alleged killer Luigi Mangione has taken yet another turn with a new federal indictment making him eligible for death row.

On Thursday, a federal grand jury in New York returned a four-count indictment, charging Mangione with two counts of stalking, a firearms offense, and murder through the use of a firearm. These charges make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Mangione is accused of stalking United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan on December 4th, 2024, before fatally shooting him. Attorney General Pam Bondi has already signaled her intention to pursue the death penalty, although Mangione’s defense team is actively working to prevent this outcome.

Mangione, who faces charges of New York state murder and terrorism, appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court on February 21st, 2025, in connection with the case. He has maintained his innocence, and his supporters have raised thousands for his defense. Prosecutors claim his actions were motivated by his disdain for the American health insurance industry.
