Damon Wayans' "Poppa's House" Scrapped at CBS After Just One Season

“Poppa’s House,” the latest masterpiece from members of the Wayans family, has been canceled after just one season.

CBS has decided not to renew the comedy series starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., making it the network’s only freshman scripted show to be axed. Despite earning a full-season order in November and performing respectably, its ratings reportedly lagged behind other CBS comedies, according to Deadline.

To boost renewal chances, CBS had asked the show to trim its budget. Although multi-camera comedies are typically more affordable, “Poppa’s House” featured top-tier talent in the Wayans duo, which likely inflated production costs.

“Poppa’s House” follows Wayans Sr. as a legendary talk radio host and “happily divorced ‘Poppa,’” whose worldview is challenged by a new female co-host. At home, he still plays father figure to his adult son, balancing family life and ambition.

Executive produced by Dean Lorey, Damon Wayans, and Damon Wayans Jr. for CBS Studios, the show now joins a growing list of Black-led shows that have been canceled after just one season across various networks. “How to Die Alone,” “Riches,” and “Clean Slate” are just a few to go in recent years, which have sparked conversations online regarding why such series are not given a chance to grow compared to its counterparts.

Nevertheless, the legacy of the Wayans family continues, and hopefully, “Poppa’s House” can thrive on a different platform.
