Conservative commentator and staunch Trump loyalist Candace Owens is breaking ranks, calling out Trump for what she views as a dangerous attack on free speech in American universities.
Owens, who’s been one of Trump’s most outspoken supporters for years, didn’t hold back in a recent video message. Her message? When it comes to freedom of expression, even elite universities like Harvard deserve public support if the alternative is federal suppression.“I never thought that I would see a day where I would be rooting for a university above Donald J. Trump and his administration, but I don’t recognize his administration right now,” Owens said.

She continued by sharing a theory developed with her team, questioning how Trump—known for championing free speech—could seemingly support efforts that clamp down on university discourse under the guise of fighting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.“It’s so messy. It’s so obvious. Everyone knows what you’re doing,” she said, referring to what she sees as a performative campaign against DEI that’s inadvertently silencing free thought.
Owens made it clear that her frustration isn’t just about politics—it’s about future generations. “When you threaten our speech, it’s not worth it so that we can have pom-poms and go hurrah for a couple of years,” she warned. “Then go, okay, well, yeah, now it kind of stinks because, oh, we’re getting arrested for wrong think.
”She sarcastically referenced herself and fellow conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, saying, “Arrest Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens! Get him! I love it!”The video ends with Owens urging conservatives to take a principled stand; even if it means siding with institutions they’ve traditionally opposed. “You better buck up and root for Harvard University in this fight,” she concluded.
Candace Owens’ comments represent a rare public rebuke from someone who has been fiercely loyal to Trump through multiple controversies. Her criticism points to a growing tension among conservative voices as President Trump’s policies evolve during his current term in office.
