The film follows Kyrah and her husband, Issac, played by Omar Sy, best known for his role in the Netflix series “Lupin,” as they take on their former special unit, Shadow Force. The couple must work through their differences to protect their young son and survive in their dangerous line of work, all while battling their ex-colleagues. Speaking with Baller Alert, Washington expressed how she relates to Kyrah, particularly as a mother.
“I feel like even though I don’t kill people for a living, every mom I know is a bada** mom. Like, that’s just part of the job. It’s to be able to balance kind of ferocity and strength and courage that you have to have every day when you’re raising a child with that more nurturing, loving sensibility. And so I think that Kyrah is really doing what every mom does by being a total bada**. She just does it a bit more extreme,” Washington shared.
Additionally, Washington praised Sy for his portrayal of a Black father raising his child in uncertain circumstances. She noted that such a bond, when shown on screen, is both refreshing and necessary.
“As much as my character is a bada** mom, the thing that moves me so much every time I watch the film is this father-son relationship,” she explained. “And in particular, to see a Black dad and his son be so connected. I love that they speak French with each other, that Omar’s character, that he’s pouring his culture, his language into his son, that he’s so present while Kyrah’s out in the world trying to protect them. He’s really doing the nurturing, the everyday parenting.”
“Shadow Force” also stars Method Man and Da’Vine Joy Randolph and is set to make its action-packed debut in theaters on May 9th.
