Cincinnati Father Rodney Hinton Jr. Could Face Death Penalty After Allegedly Killing Deputy Following Police Shooting of His Son [Video]

A grieving father, who is accused of killing a deputy after a separate officer fatally shot his son, may face the death penalty.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich announced Thursday that Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, has been indicted on two counts of aggravated murder, one count of murder, and two counts of felonious assault. Pillich confirmed that the charges carry a “potential death penalty.”

Authorities say Hinton intentionally struck and killed Deputy Henderson, who was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati on graduation day.

“I can only tell you that I’ve never seen someone hunted down and killed like this,” Pillich stated to WCPO 9.

Earlier that same day, Hinton and his family viewed police body camera footage showing his 22-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, being fatally shot by Cincinnati police. Ryan had allegedly fled a stolen car while armed.

In a separate statement, Pillich provided a detailed timeline of events: Hinton arrived at the police station at 9:33 a.m., got upset and left by 9:51 a.m., returned for his car at 12:41 p.m., and by 12:50 p.m., was seen driving toward the UC campus.

Prosecutors allege Hinton “stopped and waited for traffic to clear before crossing multiple lanes of traffic at a high rate of speed, targeting the deputy.” Henderson was hit and later died at the hospital.

Hinton is being held without bond. The investigation into Ryan’s shooting remains ongoing. Several GoFundMe fundraisers to help Hinton with his legal fees have been shut down by the platform.
