Rapper YNW Melly’s legal team has filed a motion to delay his double murder retrial until 2026, citing concerns over his mental and physical health.

Melly has been incarcerated since February 2019, awaiting trial for the alleged 2018 murders of his friends, Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. His first trial ended in a mistrial in July 2023 after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

The defense argues that Melly’s prolonged confinement under restrictive conditions has adversely affected his well-being, making it challenging for him to participate effectively in his defense. They assert that the extended pretrial detention, which has lasted over six years, has subjected him to conditions more severe than those on death row.

The retrial has faced multiple delays due to various legal motions and disputes over admissible evidence. As of now, the court has not ruled on the latest request for postponement. If granted, Melly’s trial would be postponed for an additional year, further extending the duration of his pretrial incarceration.
