Tomatoes sold in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina are now under an urgent recall due to possible salmonella contamination, the FDA confirmed.
The tomatoes, distributed by Williams Farms Repack LLC under the H&C Farms label, were shipped to wholesalers between April 23 and April 28. The FDA has classified this as a Class I recall—its most serious level—meaning the contaminated tomatoes could cause severe illness or even death.
While no illnesses have been reported yet, the recall is a proactive measure as salmonella can be especially dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Salmonella symptoms usually show up within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and include fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Most people recover without treatment, but more severe cases may require hospitalization.
The affected tomato sizes and lot numbers include several types from standard 5×6 and 6×6 tomatoes to combo packs and 3-count trays, all marked with lot codes R4467 or R4470.
Consumers in the affected states are advised to check their kitchens and discard any recalled tomatoes immediately.
