Woman Claims Costco Liquor Display Nearly Took Her Out—Now She’s Coming for Coins

A California woman is taking Costco to court, claiming a shopping trip turned into a medical nightmare when a liquor cabinet toppled over and left her with serious injuries.

Sadie Novotny filed a lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court, saying the incident happened at the Santa Rosa Costco on March 22nd while she was shopping with her husband. She alleges a liquor display cabinet fell on her “suddenly and without warning,” causing “multiple, permanent and severe” injuries.

Her attorney, Claude Wyle of Choulos, Choulos & Wyle, said Novotny was rushed to the emergency room and diagnosed with a mild concussion. “She continues to suffer from difficulty finding words, vision problems, and headaches,” Wyle told CBS MoneyWatch. He confirmed she’s pursuing millions in damages, citing general negligence, premises liability, and product liability.

The lawsuit accuses Costco of failing to address hazardous conditions and claims employees were not properly trained in handling merchandise. “The negligent conduct of defendants and each of them was a substantial factor in causing plaintiff’s injuries,” the suit states.

Wyle added that Costco has surveillance footage of the incident, but he hasn’t received it yet and doesn’t expect to until the discovery phase.

Costco has not commented publicly on the case. The retailer moved the lawsuit to the U.S. District Court for Northern California last week.

Now, Novotny seeks justice for what she claims was a preventable injury—and a shopping trip she won’t forget anytime soon.
