After five months of charging customers extra for eggs, Waffle House just served up some welcome news: the 50-cent-per-egg surcharge is officially gone.
The Georgia-based breakfast chain shared the update via Twitter, writing, “Egg-cellent news…as of June 2nd, the egg surcharge is officially off the menu. Thanks for understanding.”

Back in February, Waffle House introduced the temporary fee in response to what they called an “unprecedented” spike in egg prices, brought on by the bird flu (H5N9) outbreak. At the time, the company said, “The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (Bird Flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices. Consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.”
That shortage hit hard as cases of bird flu spread rapidly across the U.S., with the CDC reporting 70 confirmed animal cases as of July 3rd. Supply chain issues made eggs harder to get and more expensive to serve.
Instead of hiking the price of all menu items, Waffle House opted for what it called a “targeted surcharge” to handle the specific spike in egg costs. But with the USDA reporting a 7% drop in the national wholesale egg price last week, bringing it to $2.54 per dozen, Waffle House felt it was time to lift the fee.
“Egg prices are falling, farmers are getting the relief they need, and we are seeing meaningful progress in the fight against avian flu,” said USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins.
Breakfast just got a little better and cheaper.
