Tropical Storm Chantal Slams South Carolina Coast, Flood Threats Rise Across the Carolinas

Tropical Storm Chantal has officially made landfall in eastern South Carolina, and she’s not letting up. The National Hurricane Center confirmed early Sunday morning, “Chantal is now just inland in far eastern South Carolina. TS conditions expected in the warning area coast this morning, but heavy rainfall will persist over SC today & NC through Monday.”

As the storm continues pushing north, areas along the northern South Carolina and southern North Carolina coastlines are now under Tropical Storm and Flood Watches. The concern isn’t just the wind—it’s the massive downpours.

“Heavy rainfall across portions of northeastern South Carolina will cause some flash flooding concerns from Tropical Storm Chantal today and across portions of North Carolina through Monday,” the NHC said. “Isolated to scattered flash flooding could occur within more urbanized areas.”

South Carolina’s Emergency Management Division shared that they are “actively monitoring” the storm. On Saturday, they added, “officials are working closely with the members of the State Emergency Response team, the National Weather Service, and local officials to provide updated information and guidance on the storm’s potential effects.”

With Chantal moving inland, residents across the Carolinas are being urged to stay alert for changing weather conditions and flash flood alerts.
