The family of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples is speaking out and demanding answers after his tragic death during a police encounter in late June. Backed by high-profile civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the family will hold a press conference to share results from an independent autopsy that could shed new light on what really happened.

Jabari, a student at Alabama A&M University, was fatally shot on June 23 at Homewood Soccer Park. Police claimed he reached for a gun. But a witness told a very different story—insisting Jabari was unarmed when officers opened fire.

Now, weeks later, authorities with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) are still holding onto the body camera footage, refusing to release it—even though the family says they’ve seen it and believe it confirms Jabari posed no threat.

Crump, along with attorneys Leroy Maxwell and Eric Hertz, will join Jabari’s family on Tuesday, July 15 at noon for a news conference at Friendship Baptist Church in Homewood. There, they’ll release the preliminary results of the independent autopsy and continue their public push for accountability.

The family’s message is clear: They want transparency. They want justice. And they won’t stop until they get both.
