Dreka Gates has taken formal steps to end her marriage to Kevin Gates after nearly a decade. Court documents filed on July 30 cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Dreka and Kevin, married since 2015, have two children together, 12-year-old Islah and 11-year-old Khaza. In her filing, Dreka is seeking joint legal and physical custody of both.
Her filing also seeks spousal support while asking the court to remove any possibility that she could be ordered to pay support to Kevin Gates. Whether the couple has a prenuptial agreement has not been confirmed.
The divorce filing comes on the heels of attention surrounding Kevin Gates’ brief relationship with influencer Brittany Renner. Earlier this year, Renner revealed that she and the rapper had married and divorced within just 52 days.
“We got married April 6 and divorced May 28,” Renner said during an interview with REAL 92.3 LA. She expressed peace with the short-lived marriage, explaining, “I don’t feel like it’s a sucky situation because what is meant to be is always going to be. I followed my heart, and that’s what more than most people can say, and I think when you do that, you get all the clarity you need, and there’s no stone left unturned, and there’s no regret […] A lot of people, their issue is, even just in dating, in marriage, it’s people just don’t give it their all. They don’t just go for it. But I feel like when you do, you’re at peace with whatever happens because I gave 100 percent.”
The legality of that marriage remains uncertain since Kevin has been married to Dreka since 2015. Renner first called Gates her husband in May while discussing her conversion to Islam, a faith Kevin Gates embraced in 2016.
“Islam has made my life better in every single category,” Renner said. “And like my husband says, the closer you get to God, the more you get. Literally in every category of my life. I mean, dreams happen.”
Earlier this year, Dreka also addressed rumors about her own relationship with Kevin. Online speculation alleged she had been unfaithful with her female personal trainer. Dreka publicly dismissed the claims.
“I HAVE to address this because it’s really gone a little too far and I don’t care for social media to continue to spread this misinformation,” she wrote. “I have NEVER had any type of sexual or romantic encounters with my personal trainer or any ‘hired help’ and will NEVER. And just to make it CLEAR, sorry ladies but I am strictly [eggplant emoji] and I do not do plastic. I need the real thang! Please and thank you.”
