Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is going all in against state House Democrats who left the state to stop a legislative vote. In a scathing press release posted Monday, Paxton accused the lawmakers of “cowardly desertion” and said they should be arrested, punished, and face the “full force of the law.”
The drama began after a group of Democratic lawmakers walked out, allegedly fleeing the state to break quorum and block a vote that would have advanced key Republican legislation. While the specific bill has not yet been named publicly, sources say it’s tied to new voter restrictions and immigration enforcement — two of the GOP’s top priorities heading into 2026.
Paxton, in statement, called the move a publicity stunt and said the lawmakers had abandoned their duties. He described them as “jet-setting runaways” and pledged to use every legal tool available to bring them back.
The Attorney General also pointed to a 2021 Texas Supreme Court decision that gives state officials the power to hunt down lawmakers who skip out on legislative sessions. According to Paxton, that ruling allows police to find, arrest, and physically return rogue lawmakers to the Capitol if necessary.
Back in 2021, a similar Democratic walkout happened during debates over voting laws. At that time, the group fled to Washington, D.C., hoping to draw national attention. Now, history appears to be repeating itself — and the Republican leadership, including Paxton, isn’t having it.
He says Democrats are “not above the law” and insists this is about holding elected officials accountable for ignoring their responsibilities.
While Republicans argue that breaking quorum undermines democracy, Democrats say it’s a last-resort strategy to block laws they believe would harm voters’ rights and minority communities.
As tensions in Texas politics reach another boiling point, all eyes are now on whether arrests will actually happen — and how far Ken Paxton is willing to go to prove his point.
