A frightening scene unfolded Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart in Georgia when gunfire broke out on base, leaving five soldiers injured and the entire facility locked down.

The incident began around 11:04 a.m. near the Wright and Evans Army Airfield, prompting an immediate lockdown of the area, including Fort Stewart’s schools. Base officials confirmed the soldiers were treated on-site before being rushed to Winn Army Community Hospital.

In a statement released just before 1 p.m., Fort Stewart confirmed the shooter had been caught and there was no longer any threat to the community.

Three elementary schools, Kessler, Murray, and Diamond, were locked down as a precaution. Superintendent Brian Perry said in a statement, “Per DOD alert, the commander of Fort Stewart has issued a lockdown. Diamond, Kessler, and Murray Schools are all in a lockdown at this time. There is no immediate threat to the schools.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump has been briefed on the shooting and is actively monitoring the situation.

The FBI’s Savannah office confirmed it is working with Army Criminal Investigation Division to provide support as needed.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called the situation a tragedy and said, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi, spans over 280,000 acres and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. More than 10,000 soldiers and families live and work on the base, located roughly 40 miles from Savannah.

The investigation remains ongoing.
