Instagram has finally introduced a dedicated app for iPad, fulfilling a long-standing request from users.
The app became available for download on Wednesday, September 3rd, and while it retains many familiar features from the mobile version, it has been redesigned to take full advantage of the iPad’s larger screen.
One of the most notable changes is that the app opens directly to a feed of Reels, Meta’s short-form video format designed to compete with TikTok.
This decision reflects Instagram’s increasing focus on video content and comes after months of speculation about the development of a tablet-specific app.
Despite the emphasis on Reels, other core Instagram features remain easily accessible. Stories appear at the top of the homepage, and users can switch to a “Following” tab to view a feed that resembles the traditional mobile experience.
This view includes still images and offers a chronological option for those who prefer to see posts in the order they were shared.
The iPad interface also improves usability by taking advantage of the larger display. Comments on Reels appear next to full-size videos, and the direct messages page shows the inbox alongside individual chats, providing a layout similar to Messenger on desktop.
Meta has confirmed that this redesigned interface will be available on Android tablets in the near future.
With this new iPad app, Instagram is enhancing both content discovery and user experience for larger screens while signaling a continued commitment to short-form video as a central element of the platform.
