The family of 21-year-old Delta State University student Demartravion “Trey” Reed is demanding answers after being given two completely different stories about how he died.
Police reportedly told Reed’s family that he had passed away inside his dorm room. But the truth came out later through news reports and community accounts that Reed was actually found hanging from a tree on campus near the pickleball courts.
The conflicting information has left the family devastated and furious. They’ve now brought on civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is calling for an independent autopsy and a full investigation.
Officials from the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office said there were no signs of physical trauma, broken bones, or injuries suggesting foul play, and they are treating the case as a possible suicide. But the family says the lack of transparency and shifting details have only deepened their suspicions.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, while Reed’s family continues to demand clear answers, release of surveillance footage, and accountability for the misinformation they were initially given.
For Trey’s loved ones, the biggest question remains: Why were they first told he died in his dorm room, only to later discover the truth through the media?
