Trump Signs Executive Order Labeling Antifa a Terrorist Group, But Antifa Isn’t Even an Organization

Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is a decentralized movement, not a structured group.

Trump Pushes Back on Claims He Was Dead During Press Conference

Donald Trump signed an executive order officially designating antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. The White House described the movement as a dangerous force trying to undermine the U.S. government and law enforcement.

But here’s the catch: antifa isn’t actually an organization at all. The word is short for “anti-fascist” and refers to a broad, loosely connected movement of activists who oppose fascism, white supremacy, and authoritarianism. There’s no central leadership, no headquarters, no membership rolls; nothing that looks like a traditional group.

That’s where the controversy comes in. While Trump’s order directs federal agencies to investigate and disrupt antifa’s so-called “operations,” legal experts say you can’t designate something as a terrorist group if it’s not an actual entity. Antifa operates more as a philosophy or protest style than a structured network.

Labeling antifa as terrorists could open the door to targeting people based on their political beliefs or associations, even if they haven’t engaged in violence.

And since U.S. law doesn’t provide a process for designating domestic groups as terrorist organizations the way it does with foreign groups, Trump’s executive order is likely to face challenges in court.
