Government Shutdown Threatens to Disrupt U.S. Air Travel System, Air Traffic Union Warns

As Congress continues to battle over budget priorities, the nation’s aviation system is on edge. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) didn’t hold back on Wednesday, warning that the ongoing government shutdown is putting public safety and national air travel efficiency at serious risk.

“When the federal government shuts down, it introduces unnecessary distractions and our entire aviation system is weakened,” said NATCA President Nick Daniels in a statement. “Congress must restore federal funding so that the safety and efficiency of our National Airspace System is not compromised.”

NATCA, which represents close to 20,000 air traffic controllers, engineers, and other aviation safety workers, is sounding the alarm as the shutdown sends shockwaves through the Federal Aviation Administration. According to a contingency plan released by the Department of Transportation, over 11,000 FAA employees—roughly 25 percent of the agency’s staff—will be furloughed.

That still leaves more than 13,000 air traffic controllers on the job, but they’ll be working without pay. Hiring and training new controllers will also continue, adding to the pressure.

Airlines are also bracing for trouble. A group representing major U.S. carriers has already warned Congress that flight delays could escalate, especially as both controllers and TSA agents are forced to continue their duties without a paycheck.

Daniels highlighted another layer of concern—the harsh working conditions already faced by many in the field.

“Some of our members are working six days a week and ten hours a day,” he said. “The increased stress and fatigue that comes from working long hours without pay cannot be overstated.”

Still, despite the mounting pressure, Daniels praised the unwavering commitment of the workforce.

“Despite the shutdown, there is one thing that will not change — air traffic controllers are incredibly proud of the public service they provide, and they will answer the bell without fail.”

With no end in sight to the political standoff, travelers may need to buckle up for more than just turbulence in the air. The real storm might be coming from Washington.
