Nelly Furtado is taking a step back from performing after a 25-year career in music.
She shared the news on Instagram while celebrating the anniversary of her debut album, “Whoa Nelly!,” posting images from the beginning of her career alongside recent performance footage from Berlin.
“25 years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that,” she wrote.
While she has enjoyed returning to the stage, Furtado said she plans to focus on personal and creative endeavors.
“All this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she explained.
Music remains central to her life.
“I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever,” she added.
Furtado expressed her gratitude to fans and collaborators alike.
“I’m grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder. Endless gratitude to anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows,” she wrote.
She also thanked the teams who helped bring her creative visions to life.
“Thank you and goodnight!” Furtado concluded, marking the close of this chapter in her career while keeping the door open for future creative projects.
