A Florida man who has remained on the run for over a decade after allegedly killing his wife is finally facing justice.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that 41‑year‑old Ramone O’Neil Clayton was apprehended on October 27 in San Diego by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Task Force, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service. According to the Miami Gardens Police Department, Clayton has been wanted since 2012.
Investigators say that on September 23, 2012, in a home on Northwest 207th Street in Miami Gardens, Clayton “shot and killed his wife, 35‑year‑old Stephanie Ulette Clayton.” The violent act took place during a gathering of some kind, where several witnesses saw the shooting unfold. Clayton was quickly identified, but he fled the scene in a vehicle before the police could arrive.
An arrest warrant for second‑degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony was issued at the time. Although authorities pursued Clayton for 13 years, he successfully evaded capture despite ongoing efforts by Miami Gardens detectives and U.S. Marshals.
Authorities indicate a recent tip placed Clayton in San Diego and led to the operation that resulted in his arrest. He is currently being held without bond at the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Central Jail, awaiting extradition back to Florida.
It’s unknown if he had help getting to and hiding out in San Diego for all these years. Investigators have not revealed details regarding his time on the run.
