Serena Williams is having the worst week ever. First she caught quite a bit of backlash when asked her thoughts on the Steubenville rape case. If you’re not familiar with the case, last year a 16 year old Steubenville High School girl was passed out then stripped and sexually assaulted by her school mates. Even worse, photos and videos were posted online. The guys involved received a jail sentence as well as were convicted of the dissemination of child pornography since the girl was underage. When Serena was asked her thoughts on the case by Rolling Stone magazine she said:
“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people,” she told Rolling Stone. Then she continues “She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously, I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
Great job Serena, blame the 16 year old girl for the star football players sticking their fingers all up inside her and posting it on Instagram. Clearly not a good move by the star tennis player. Needless to say she did apologize but that wasn’t the only silly thing she did in that Rolling Stone interview. Serena also took shoots at her Wimbledon competitor Maria Sharapova.
“There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest.” Serena exits the car and the conversation moves on to a top-five player who is now in love. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring,” says Serena in a loud voice. “She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”
Did you think Maria Sharapova was gonna hear about this and not read Serena down? Russians can throw shade too honey!
“I definitely was a little bit sad to hear what she had to say about the whole [rape] case. I just think that she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else. It’s just getting attention and controversy. If she wants to talk about something personal then she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much going on in her life, many positives, that’s what it should be about.”
Was that a read? *turns the page*
I actually do think Maria is right. Some people have got to stop offering their opinion on people and things if they’re only going to end up backtracking. From the looks of it, Serena’s entire Rolling Stone Magazine interview (which was recorded) was a hot mess.
