Nigerian Parents Get A Glimpse Of Their Daughters Stolen By Boko Haram

Boko Haram has been terrorizing Nigeria, reaching global exposure after hundreds of Nigerian school girls were kidnapped from their Chibok Government Secondary School dormitory as they slept two years ago. Out of over two hundred girls, a few dozen were luckily able to escape, telling their family of what happened. For the parents of the other girls, they have heard nothing.

After months of not knowing, some parents are now able to breathe a bitter sweet sigh of relief, knowing that their daughters are still alive.

CNN obtained a video of some of the Chibok Girls. The video was sent to negotiators as “proof of life.”  It has also been seen by members of the government.  The video shows some of the girls being asked their name, where they were taken from, and other questions. The video was dated December 2015. This is the first time some of these parents have seen their daughters in two years.

CNN interviewed Rifkatu Ayuba, the mother of one of the girls abducted. Her daughter, Saratu, is now 17 years old. “I felt like removing her from the screen,” Ayuba tells CNN. “If I could, I would have removed her from the screen.”

Before the 2-minute video comes to an end, one of the girls identified as Naomi Zakaria, makes a scripted plea to negotiators. “I am speaking on 25 December 2015, on behalf of the all the Chibok girls and we are all well,” she says. She emphasizes the word “all,” implying that though only 15 girls are shown in the video, none of the 200+ have been harmed.

Let’s hope that this is truly the case. I pray that these girls are returned home, safely and soundly.
