Jay Z has been a mentor of sorts for Nick Jonas, who knew? In November 2015, Roc Nation partnered with Philymack, a company founded by Nick Jonas’ manager Phil McIntyre. Jay Z has been so involved that he even came up with the title of Jonas’ forthcoming album.
“He’s been super hands-on,” Jonas said. For his new album, “I had a title picked out . . . ‘Unhinged’ . . . [Jay Z] said, ‘I don’t feel like it quite sums up the story you’re telling. Let’s just talk about this year of your life. What’s it been like?’ And I said, ‘Last year was complicated.’ He was like, ‘That’s the title!’”
Last year was complicated indeed. Nick Jonas just got through a heartbreaking breakup with his ‘unnamed’ live-in girl friend. A situation he notes as “a big mistake.” That mistake, however, birthed some good music, “Champagne Problems” and “Close” for example.
“Last Year Was Complicated” is slated for a June 10 release.
