Ballerific Beauty: How to Treat Dyed Natural Hair

There’s so much versatility in one’s natural hair.  You can wear different styles from straight, wavy, curly, braids or weaves. You can even spice it up by playing around with hair color.

As naturals, we try to stray away from harsh chemicals that could modify or damage the hair’s texture and/or curl pattern. So how can one change up her hair color without damaging. The key is to remember that it’s important to keep your hair very well moisturized and hydrated to avoid breakage and damage to the hair cuticle after you’ve added color.

Now that you know the key to hair dyeing success, you must now choose the proper hair dye for you.

When it comes to dyeing your hair, there are different types of hair dyes: temporary rinse, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, permanent, bleach and highlights.

While you’re looking for a new hair color keep in mind to use dyes that are  ammonia free and don’t contain other harmful chemicals such as Quaternium-15, Alkylphenol ethoxylates or Phenylenediamine.

Temporary rinses are often a (safe) favorite but there are natural, chemical-free ways to color your hair also. This includes henna powder, coffee, tea, beets, carrots, and lemon juice.

In the end, it doesn’t matter how you dye your hair, it’s always crucial that you take proper care of it.

What happens if you’ve bleached your hair and you notice that it’s dry and brittle?

The best way to handle dry and brittle hair that’s been colored is to stick to a weekly wash schedule. It’s normally best to co-wash (conditioner wash) or use shampoos that are sulfate free. Also use daily leave-in conditioning treatments, argon oils and limit heat usage.

To prevent your color from fading early, wash with a color-preserving shampoo and conditioner to prevent stripping your natural oils while adding protection. I suggest using TUI Radiant Color Treatment Set.

Use a hot oil treatment and deep conditioner with every wash to add extra moisture and shine to your curls. I suggest Shea Moisture Strengthen, Growth & Restore Treatment Masque, Shea Moisture Sacha Inchi Oil Omega 3-6-9 Rescue & Repair Masque, and Carol’s Daughter TUI Color Care Hydrating Mask.

If you’ve been experiencing dry hair, excessive breakage, and constant shedding you should hold off on dyeing your hair to avoid any further damage.

As always, if you’re a novice to the world of haircare, it’s always a best practice to have your hair colored by a professional. Make sure they consult you on proper maintenance.
