It seems players will need to get better control of their emotions on the field because the NFL plans to move forward with instituting a rule that would require an automatic ejection for players charged with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a game.
On Thursday, league officials stated that the proposal, will be discussed next week at an annual meeting of NFL owners.
Based on the NFL’s ejection rule, referees will be reminded that they can eject players for flagrant offenses at any time. However, offenses committed by a player from the three proposed categories will be automatic. Those include:
- Throwing a punch, or a forearm, or kicking at an opponent, even though no contact is made.
- Using abusive, threatening, or insulting language or gestures to opponents, teammates, officials, or representatives of the League
- Using baiting or taunting acts or words that engender ill will between teams.
The implementation of this proposal, or any of the other 19 rule changes suggested require the consent of 24 team owners.
Many had been eager to get changes made following the widely discussed incident between New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham and Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman.
