Ben Carson is working hard to earn that hopeful VP spot next to Donald Trump. After endorsing the GOP candidate hopeful, Ben Carson now blames the ongoing violence at Trump rallies on the non-violent protesters.
Carson appeared on the TODAY show. Instead of focusing on Trump and his supporters, Carson says that some of the protesters who have attended the rallies are “angry” and should be open to a “civil discussion.”
“There is a real possibility of escalation, because those who are the victim of them have two choices, they can submit and do whatever those protestors want them to do, or they can fight back,” he said. “And if they deicide to fight back, there could be an escalation.”
Carson continued, “The problem is that there are those who are being taught that if someone disagrees with you, you have the right to interfere with their First Amendment rights, their ability to express themselves, their freedom of speech. That’s where the emphasis needs to be.”
Unfortunately Carson doesn’t know much about the First Amendment because that is NOT how it works. Just as Trump has freedom of speech and freedom to assemble, so do his protesters. The protesters have been quiet and peaceful, meanwhile his supporters have punched, kicked, yelled an spat at them.
Furthermore, civilians cannot infringe on other civilians’ First Amendment rights. That’s not how the First Amendment works, and as someone who was once running for President, you would think he knew that. The First Amendment protects citizens from the government. This means you cannot simply be arrested and/or punished for stating your views. The First Amendment doesn’t protect you from punishment from other civilians. You can still get your jaw cracked for talking reckless.
