The new Netflix Original series ‘The Get Down’ is a vibrant, inspiring, musical dramedy set in the South Bronx in the Late 1970s. The show highlights the time when disco music started to run it’s course and the underground hip hop era began to peak. If you’ve finished Season 1 Part 1 of the brand new series, you’re probably already anticipating the release of part 2 because the show is just, that damn good!
It wasn’t long into the season until Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, played by actor and rapper Jaden Smith, showed the uniqueness in his character. Smith shared in his feature Variety’s “Power of Young Hollywood” issue why he connects with the outsider in Dizzee.
“I’ve always looked at life differently,” says the 18-year-old.
“I always knew no one was going to understand me — since before I could talk — and that’s why I was so quiet. I was very calm, very to myself. I could tell I felt about life differently than other kids; I could tell by the way they treated me.”
In the show, the artistic Dizzee finds a friend that helps him explore a lot more than graffiti when the two guys nearly locked lips in a gay club while listening to Christina Aguilera’s record “Telepathy”. The Get Down, like many other series lately, is certainly not shying away from sexuality or homosexuality. Smith securely plays this role and dedicates his self confidence to his parents.
“My parents told me that the world was harsh and that we had to be strong within ourselves,” Jaden shared with Variety.
