The Remy Ma wedding that fell apart at Rikers Island jail in May has apparently happened anyway, because Papoose has confirmed that he and Remy are married.
The couple had planned to exchange vows at the New York jail while Remy awaited sentencing for a shooting outside a New York club last summer. ABC7 New York reported that correction officials called off the weekend ceremony after Papoose showed up with a handcuff key. Remy’s lawyer, Ivan Fisher, denied the key could unlock handcuffs, and Papoose was not charged. Fisher said the couple still planned to wed, possibly after Remy is moved to an upstate prison.
Days later, a judge sentenced Remy to eight years in prison after she was convicted of assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion. She was convicted over the shooting of a woman named Makeda outside the club, and Remy has said the shooting was an accident.
Now Papoose, whose real name is Shamele Mackie, has told XXL magazine the two are husband and wife. He would not say when or where the ceremony took place. Asked directly if they had wed, he answered, “Yep, that’s all I’m gonna say.” He also insisted the original wedding plans were never meant to soften Remy’s image before her sentencing, saying the date was just the date.
