Fox’s hit show Empire, featuring Golden Globe Best Actress in a TV Series Drama winner Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, and Bryshere Gray, will be back for a third season.
The news was announced by the chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group on Friday during a press tour. The popular show, which premiered a year ago, has become an essential part of Fox’s lineup and has brought in more than 20 million viewers. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Drama this year. Though Empire didn’t win the award, the show’s star, Taraji P. Henson, did take home her first Golden Globe for her role in the show.
However, despite all the good news, the show is still dealing with legal woes. Fox and Empire creator Lee Daniels are currently battling a $300 million federal lawsuit filed by a woman who claims that the show ripped Cookie’s story from her. Sophia Eggleston, a former drug dealer, argues that the plot for the show was based on a book she wrote about her own life. Since Empire came on air, this is the fourth time someone has tried to sue the show for allegedly stealing their idea.
Currently in its second season, Empire will return on March 30 after its winter break to finish up the rest of the season. With season 3 in the works, we can expect more sassiness, suspense, and drama coming our way. Can’t wait!
