An LAPD detective who was actively investigating rape allegations against NBA baller Derrick Rose, was found dead in a California residence Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said Wednesday that she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The detective has been identified as 44-year-old Nadine Hernandez.

Around 2:45pm, officers responded to reports of a shooting. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

Officials say they will work with the LA County Coroner’s Office as part of the investigation to determine what really happened.

“At this time, there are no signs of foul play, and this incident is being investigated as a suicide,”Whittier Police Department said Wednesday. “However, this is an ongoing investigation.”

According to CBS, the home where Hernandez was found belonged to a retired LAPD lieutenant. Other reports reveal the house belonged to a relative. However, it is still unclear if Hernandez lived in the home. A firearm was found at the scene but it is unknown whether it was the late officer’s service weapon.

As previously stated, Hernandez was one of two detectives investigating the Derrick Rose rape case. According to reports, a letter from the detective was used as evidence in a bid to re-conceal Rose’s accusers’ identity after a federal judge ruled that the woman could not remain anonymous during an associated civil trial.

“At this point there is no indication that her case work had any connection to her death,” LAPD said. “The Rose investigation will continue unimpeded.”

As we mentioned previously, the civil trial is still underway following the judge’s decision to continue, despite text messages initially being withheld from the defense.
