Cam Newton Has “Great Discussion” With Roger Goodell, Calais Campbell Fined For Low Hit

On Sunday, Cam Newton used the post-game conference to address the late hits and no-flags he has experienced this season. Visibly upset, the Panthers quarterback explained that the physical play has begun to take the fun out of the game for him. Newton’s complaints stemmed from the low hit that left him shaken up on Sunday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

Newton revealed that those hits, without a flag, make him feel unsafe on the field. So much so, that he said he wanted to discuss the matter with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Apparently, Newton stuck to his word and spoke with Goodell on Tuesday.

“The nice part was the commissioner was a willing listener,” the Panthers coach said of Newton’s “great discussion” with Goodell. “It was great and the nice thing is that (Cam Newton) was able to say what needed to be said. At the end of the day, it’s not about getting special treatment, it’s about being treated the same across the board.”

Since then, it’s been reported that the Cardinals’ defensive lineman responsible for the hit, has been fined.  NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Calais Campbell was fined $18,231 for tackling Newton below the knees. Although, there was no call during the game, it seems like Newton’s discussion helped.
