Georgia Governor Nathan Deal is receiving a lot of backlash after he referred to minorities as “colored people” in a recent speech.
The statement came during Deal’s October 3rd speech in Savannah, GA regarding the Opportunity School District constitutional amendment.
“The irony of some of the groups who are opposing to do something to help these minority children is beyond my logic,” said Deal. “If you want to advance the state of colored people, start with their children.”
After video from his speech went viral, Nathan Deal received much criticism. According to the Governor, however, his words were taken out of context and he was referring to the NAACP, who is against Amendment 1.
“I did not mean to insult anyone, but I was upset,” Deal said following the backlash. “Well, I think I misspoke … I didn’t use the entire name of the organization. I don’t think I misspoke in terms of where I think they should be on this issue,” he further explains.
Georgia residents will decide on November 8th whether the state government should have power over failing schools. . If it passes, schools that repeatedly test poorly could be taken out of the hands of local school boards and put under the control of a special superintendent appointed by the governor and based in Atlanta.
