Retiring California Senator and Hillary Clinton supporter Barbara Boxer has introduced a bill to eliminate the Electoral College.
In a statement released Tuesday (Nov. 15), Sen. Boxer said that the legislation would determine the winner of presidential elections by the outcome of the popular vote. She cited Trump’s victory despite Hillary being projected to win the popular vote by more than 2 million votes.
“This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency,” said Senator Boxer. “The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately. Every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts.”
Senator Boxer also noted that Donald Trump called the Electoral College a “disaster for a democracy” in 2012, when Obama won reelection. But on Tuesday morning, Trump reversed his stance, saying the system is “actually genius.”
Her proposed bill seeks to abolish the Electoral College and amend the U.S. Constitution.
