In January, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) was facing some serious charges in South Africa. The rapper was accused of using fraudulent travel documents to allow he and his family to live in Cape Town, South Africa for several years. Unfortunately, his family’s visas expired in 2014. Bey also tried to leave the country using a “World Government of World Citizens” passport, which is not recognized. He was arrested at the airport and faced charges of using a false identity and aiding and abetting his family to stay illegally in South Africa.
The case that had Mos Def tied up for most of 2016 is finally over. After he “unreservedly apologized to the government of South Africa,” the rapper and his family will finally be able to leave the country. In a statement, the country’s home affairs department said they were “satisfied with the apology [and] will withdraw the charges against him.” However, the department also adds that Mos Def will be barred from re-entry into the country.
