The quarterback controversy in Dallas will continue throughout Week 17, however the team seems to be making moves toward a decision in regards to Dak Prescott’s backup. For those wondering, it won’t be veteran quarterback Tony Romo.

After Monday night’s 40-piece victory over the Detroit Lions, owner Jerry Jones said the rookie will be the starting quarterback against the Philadelphia Eagles, shooting down all speculation that Romo will get his first start of the 2016 season. But, it seems Jones just wants to preserve Romo’s health as much as he can.

“I hear this stuff about rust,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “Well, Romo doesn’t look rusty at practice, I’ll tell you that. He’s out there practicing against some pretty good guys. Romo has had huge numbers of experience, he’s seen everything that an NFL defense can throw at him. And so you don’t have to worry about the number of repetitions.

“All of that said, it’s better not to have a risk with him and to keep him available to us during the playoff.”

He made it clear that he doesn’t want to risk the veteran to injury by placing him behind the second-team offensive line, which in turn sparked rumors that Mark Sanchez could hit the field against the Eagles.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the third-string quarterback will touch the field against his former team, in the event the Cowboys get in position to pull starters.

Sanchez has a career record of 37-35 with 86 touchdowns to 84 interceptions, reports state.
