Elijah Cummings Talks Inauguration: “If The Public Knew What Members of Congress Know….” They Would Boycott Too

The inauguration of Donald Trump is less than 24 hours away.
In light of the swearing in of the President-elect, demonstrators have filled the streets to protest the reality star’s presidency. Since the election, celebrities and leaders of both political parties have denounced some of Trump’s views, divisive language and actions. Many have severed ties with all things Trump to further demonstrate their disapproval of the President-elect. Others have taken their objection a bit further with a vow to boycott the inauguration.
However, according to Rep. Elijah Cummings, if the general public had access to classified information about the President-elect, more people would join the rally to boycott the presidential inauguration.
In an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Cummings revealed that he would be at the inauguration, but over 50 Democratic politicians will not be.
“You’ve got to understand that members of Congress have a lot of information that the public does not have,” Cummings said, in regards to Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election. “And I can tell you over the last week or two, the classified briefings that I have been to, and if the pubic knew what members of Congress know…The information will come out later at some point. Then the public will fully understand.”
Cuomo interjected, wondering why the public has not been made aware of the information Cummings is referring to, “If it’s that important that it’s going to make people not go to the inauguration….shouldn’t people know?”
Apparently, Congress needed to do more to investigate Russia’s involvement in the election and FBI Director Jame Comey’s role in the WikiLeaks scandal for more information to be released to the public.
“It seems as if the Republicans are sort of letting President-elect Trump sort of just move forward with regard to the conflict of interest issues [and] this whole hacking issue,” he said. “And I’m really concerned that we as Democrats have to push harder on Republicans to do something so that our standards are met and that he gets rid of these conflicts and he also deals with the hacking.”
But, in regards to his attendance at the inauguration, he says he wants to be a witness.
“I want to be a witness to history,” Cummings said. “But I also want it understood that this is our watch and we’ve got to protect this democracy. This, to me, is bigger than President-elect Trump. I’m concerned that we are moving slowly but surely towards a crisis of a legitimacy with regard to our core institutions: CIA, FBI, NSA.”
“Even our Office of Government Ethics has been attacked by the Republicans,” Cummings said. “At some point a lot of information is going to come to me as the top person on the Oversight and Government Reform committee and I don’t want anybody to say, ‘Well, he was just one of the people that was protesting.’ I want them to understand, this is not about Democrat or Republican.”
