It appears the ICE raids won’t be coming to an end any time soon. According to various reports, the Trump administration is looking to mobilize up to 100,000 National Guard troops to handle immigration round ups. It appears, according to an 11-page document, that the round ups will also include areas that are not in close proximity to Mexico’s border.
CNBC reports, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are included in the proposal, but so are Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. This would be the first time that National Guard troops would be used this far north of the border. It goes far beyond past deployments.
The drafted memo, dated January 25 and reportedly written by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, would give governors of each state a choice in whether they would like to utilize militarization as an add on to carry out immigration enforcement.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer says these reports are “100 percent not true” and “irresponsible.” ”There is no effort at all to utilize the National Guard to round up unauthorized immigrants,” he added.
However, Spicer says he couldn’t deny altogether that the subject had never been discussed in the administration.
