Congress Will Let Internet Providers Sell Your Web Browsing History

Congress has just passed a measure that will allow internet providers to sell your web browsing history to advertisers without your permission. All that’s needed now is a signature from Donald Trump.

The House, under the Congressional Review Act,  passed a resolution today, overturning an FCC rule made under Obama’s era that required internet providers to get customers’ permission before sharing their browsing history with other companies. That same FCC rule also required Internet providers to protect customers from hackers and notify them of any security breaches.

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, who opposed the measure, said that the acronym “ISP” would now stand for “information sold for profit” or “invading subscriber privacy,” instead of “internet service provider.” he added that the measure would allow internet service providers to “take control away from consumers and relentlessly collect and sell their sensitive information without the consent of that family.”

It’s ironic that Trump is expected to sign this measure, considering the fact that he complained so much about a possible invasion of his own privacy.
